Frame Tent Buying Guide: Clear Sides, Space and Specifications

A buyer-focused guide to frame tent structures, clear panels, anchoring and event layouts.

When looking for a frame tent, buyers often begin with an attractive picture of a clear-sided wedding marquee. The more important questions come next: Does the frame provide the interior layout you need? Can it be safely installed on your chosen site? And does the quotation include all of the panels and hardware shown in the picture?

Quick answer: Choose a frame tent by its actual structural specification, usable clear space, anchoring method and available sidewall options. Get these details in writing instead of assuming every frame tent works the same way.

What makes a frame tent different?

A frame tent uses a framework to hold up the canopy. Depending on the model, it may reduce or eliminate central support poles and allow a relatively open layout. This can be helpful for banquet tables, dance floors, displays or church seating. However, not every model has the same span or internal structure.

Confirm the actual usable interior

Ask for a dimensioned plan showing the tent’s length, width, eave height and any internal framework. If your event requires a long central aisle, a stage or a number of round tables, make sure the proposed layout can fit around the specified components.

A footprint of 9m × 15m is 135 m² by multiplication, but that figure does not establish a legal or safe guest capacity. Your event’s permitted occupancy and exit design require a separate assessment.

Clear side panels are an option, not an assumption

Clear panels can help preserve outdoor views while offering some shelter. Ask the supplier for the exact materials, panel configuration, attachment method, door positions and whether the walls can be operated as needed. Ask to see close-up photos or a sample—not only a wide-angle promotional photograph.

Check how the panels will be cleaned and stored to minimise scratching or cloudiness, and whether replacements can be ordered for individual sections.

Site, anchors and wind

A frame tent must be restrained against movement using its approved anchoring design. Concrete, paving, grass and compacted ground have different implications. The anchor system is not interchangeable simply because one approach seems easier on the day.

Discuss site slope, nearby structures, vehicle access and clearance for emergency routes. Request the manufacturer’s wind and operating guidance for the specific configuration, including any special conditions when sidewalls are installed. Do not rely on a generic claim that a frame is “windproof”.

Event safety and local permission

Temporary event structures may require approvals under local bylaws and event rules. The City of Cape Town explains how temporary structures can form part of an event application. Confirm the requirements of the municipality where you plan to use the tent; do not treat a product listing as a compliance certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Do all frame tents have no centre poles? No. Confirm the frame design and a proper structural drawing for the exact model.

Are clear sides included? Not necessarily. Ask for them as an explicit line item in your quote.

Can I put a frame tent on paving? Only with a manufacturer-approved site-specific restraint system and any necessary venue approval.
